The electric field (E-field) carries charges. To understand how the charge of the E-field varies, an interactive meter is under the player’s control. Players also explore the concepts of pinned (stationary) and free (mobile) charges. The player has control over the mobile charge, which also acts as a meter.  The game begins with 3 demo examples, then 4 scored trials are available.

Where should the meter be placed to match the E-field target? Immediate feedback is given.

Coulomb’s Law is displayed as a relationship on the screen and dynamically changes with placement of the meter. (Because our games do not include the small constant k, it is considered a relationship.)

Features + Learning Goals
Students will learn:
  • ·    Difference between pinned and mobile (free) charges
  • ·    That the E-field results from a net charge
  • ·    How to explore differences in the magnitude of the E-field
  • ·    The magnitude is non-linear, because the denominator r in Coulomb’s Law is squared
  • ·    Introduction of dynamic Coulomb’s Law as a relationship
